When shopping for a firepit, there are a few things to decide on before you buy.
Firepit Tables for Dining and Entertaining
If you’ll be using your firepit table to eat at or have drinks, there are three heights to consider, just like traditional dining tables.
- Dining Height – The traditional height for sitting down to eat. These chairs will be lower to the ground and are great for both large and small groups.
- Café or ADA Height – Slightly taller than dining height, these tables are a little harder to come by but still an option through many brands. They look and feel like your traditional dining table but are easier to use for those with mobility issues and are usually built to ADA standards to fit a wheelchair underneath.
- Counter Height – Taller than dining height, we say you sit back into these height chairs. This is a comfortable height for most people to sit at and get in and out of. These are also a good height to stand and chat at if you have a lot of people mingling at a party or moving back and forth to the grill.
- Bar or Balcony Height – These seats you have to climb up into since they’re so tall. They may be great for seeing over balcony railings but they are harder for those with limited mobility like small children or elderly and disabled people.
It should also be noted that Dining, Café, Counter, and Bar heights are not universal through different brands or even different lines from the same brand. If you’re looking to replace just a table or just chairs to a set you already have, it’s not guaranteed that any table or chair combo will match and measurements will be important.
Firepits Heights for Decoration and Ambiance
Firepits also come in many options for lounge areas depending on how you plan to use the space.
- Chat or Casual Height – These firepits are slightly taller than the standard coffee table, usually putting the top of the table level with your seat cushion. We love these for lounge space where you may be putting finger foods or drinks on the table in a casual setting.
- Occasional or Coffee Table Height – These tables are lower to the ground to provide as much line of sight around the lounge area as possible. We love these if you have a seating area outside a window so you can see past everything and enjoy your view. This height usually requires a special horizontal propane tank for use.
- Pillow Height – Named as such because these firepits are low enough that you can sit around them on floor cushions and still maintain line of sight in conversation. These firepits are ultra low and usually have a modern look to them. This height usually requires an external tank or hard plumbed gas line for use.
- Miscellaneous – There are plenty of other heights out there for firepits, especially if it’s a custom built design that’s worked into your landscaping. Many fire features have to be designed around mechanical clearances like pipe fittings, burner depth, or even smart ignition systems.
Just like the entertaining heights, firepits are not going to be the same height across brands or even in different lines of the same brand. If you have a firepit already and are looking for furniture to go around it or are looking to find a firepit to match furniture you already have, measurements are going to be important to your decision.
