Solid Piece of Glass - You cannot open the glass or touch the logs, there may be a fine mesh screen in front of the glass

Glass Doors or Chain Mesh Screens - You can open the doors and touch the logs, inside looks like brick or metal

Solid Screen - The screen stays on the unit for operation and there is no glass behind it

Nothing on the Front, NO Ventilation - You can reach in and touch the logs and the top of the fireplace is either a solid piece or the damper has been shut

Nothing on the Front, Vented - You can reach in and touch the logs, they have soot on them and it is vented out of the house. The damper may be locked open.
